The Challenge

1. Design a product

Come up with a product design that uses the Internet of Things (IoT) to increase civic engagement.

2. Produce a video

Develop a Kickstarter-style promotional video to introduce the product’s purpose and civic impact.

Our Solution

Trekko is an IoT product that enables wheelchair users to improve Google Maps for themselves and others.

The small, portable device attaches to a wheelchair and sends live data on the conditions of sidewalks and roads traversed to a cooperative IoT ecosystem.

Anonymized data can be shared with Google Maps to develop a new wheelchair route feature to predict travel difficulty levels, pedestrian traffic, and other hazards.

Current accessibility reports can also be used by local government, city planners, and other accessibility advocates to help identify and address ADA violations.

With Trekko, wheelchair users are both the benefactors and beneficiaries of their civic engagement.

Build the city you want, one street at a time.

Kickstarter-Style concept Video

In just 2.5 minutes, find out how the (imaginary) “Pittsburgh Ability Lab” could partner with Google Maps to use Trekko in a cooperative IoT ecosystem.
